start something that matters.

I actually thought this was pretty irritating at first,
but he really has something to say.

There is a box suppressed deep in our chests
Where forgotten dreams and consuming passions are laid to rest

This wooden crate is packed tight with:

Crumpled sketches on coffee stained napkins
Brilliant ideas from an enlightening conversation
A painted canvas full of life and imperfections
Notebooks spilling with business plans, poems, and powerful intentions

We’ve all heard about the bottom billion
How 72 million children can’t attend school
How 22,000 of them die daily from poverty’s rule
How HIV, Malaria, and Diarrhea are preventable, even treatable

How we have the tools
Yet millions still suffer and die because what they’re missing is me
What they’re missing is you

What the world is missing is what you have always longed to do:
To provide water, clothing, shelter, shoes
And to do so following your boxed-in muse

So I invite you
To unpack your crate
Find your spark, light your fuse
And start something
That the world can truly use

Then when your box is empty
And your tools are in hand
Flip your box upside down
to use it as your voices’ stand
Shout your dreams, wave your banners
Plant a seed, pen tomorrow’s chapter

I say to you standers
You box top dancers

Paint all you painters
Paint something that captures

Write all you writers
Write something that answers

Build all you builders
Build something that shelters

And start all you starters
Start something that matters.

Powerful poem, don't you think?

And a lesson to myself not to judge what people say by how they look or sound.

me: "pms."

back from the...

I won't finish that sentence.

A coursemate who disappeared from the Faculty a year ago, deactivated his phone number and email, and temporarily suspended his Facebook account.

He came back just to say this.

This is, I think, a testament to Wai Hwa's life.

Other than the absence of just one friend,
Everything is as it should be in the Faculty.

Everything is as it should be,
But the world is now short of at least one person.

It just makes life seem so...

Doesn't it make you feel that there has got to be more to life than just... us?

berserk.

when you have too many things to do, and they're all different things for different people...

too cute to ignore.

No la. Hippos don't go berserk. You go berserk.

But then when you think of cute things, you become sane again.

Chen Li's photo.

Or maybe that's just me.

Father,
Again I ask:
Expand my hours.

*knock*

In a single day, over a span of 2 hours, I've discovered so many different kinds of knocks.

Did you know the standard style is to knock three times?

It's the strength of the knocks that makes them so different.

There's the...

Timid Knock
It makes the knocker sound very unsure of himself. And it makes the knockee feel quite uncertain herself. All hail the postman who isn't sure if this was the right unit to come knocking on.

Urgent Knock
It's three knocks still, but much faster. Because the faster you go, the louder the knocks are. Like when you need to wake your housemate up because the postman is asking for his signature, and your housemate is sleeping like a log.

Hmmph Knock
You can literally feel the "Hmmph" in this one. (for the record, "Hmmph" and "Hmm" are two totally different sounds) Like maybe, the way your neighbour feels when you're parking in his parking bay and he needs you to get out of it pronto. And the knockee usually runs to the door. Or hides. In this case, she ran.

Here I am!
I stand at the door and knock.
If anyone hears My voice and opens the door,
I will come in and eat with him,
and he with Me.

Revelation 3:20

When Jesus knocks, what kind of knock is it?

medical negligence.

"Claimants don't go from "I'm angry" to "I want to sue" just like that. It's usually because when they ask for an explanation or an apology, all they get is a stone wall. Worse, they end up paying even more money to remedy whatever happened because of someone's negligence. And while all this is happening, everyone they ask lies to them. In the end, they feel that suing is the only option left."

--Dr Sharon.

Truly.

Sometimes all it takes is "I'm sorry".

if everybody could just love everybody,
that would be the end of it.

but we don't live in that kind of world.

we live in a world full of weak people.

it's because you're fragile that you have to try to be tough.

with that in mind,
maybe we can love everybody better.

what law students do on a public holiday.

another soul.

"eh tsehwei, going for lawnite?"

"no..."

"why!?"

"my grandma's 90th birthday."

"ah yes, that one more important, that one more important."

and just like that,
that was our last conversation.

i remember leaving the cafe that day with a smile on my face,
thanking God for the timely encouragement
that assured me that i wasn't giving up my final prom
for something less.

"do you know where to find a mechanic?"

"near you ah? section 17 got. i take you there tomorrow."

and just like that,
that was the last time i heard his voice.
in a phone conversation with hooi ping
about my punctured tyre.

 i remember wondering
why i never knew he was such a kind person before.

i'm thankful that these are the thoughts and feelings
i was left with.

but still,

i lost a friend.

again i ask myself
why i never tried harder with this friend.

but today it is not about me.

today it is about his family,
his two best friends who lost a comrade,
and my coursemates who were closer to him than i ever was.

so much to pray for.

will you pray with me?

RIP,

Wee Wai Hwa.

simplicity.

I usually won't come up to speak in front of an audience, but someone has to tell you all about the awesomeness of my grandfather.

I never got to hear my kong kong speak, because he was always sick. But I got to read what he wrote. When I got baptized, I got a bag of my kong kong's notes. They were very tidy, very neat.

My kong kong is also a loving person. When we went out to eat as a family, he would take my sister in one hand, and me in the other hand, and cross the road together.

When we wanted to go to the toilet, he would also accompany us.

I remember last time, I would tell my mother I want ice-cream. My kong kong would straightaway take out RM10 and say, "Go buy your ice-cream." But I don't want. I would rather argue with my mum.

...That's all. Thank you.

-Joel Tan-

And in those few words, inarticulate as they were,
we were all reminded of his kong kong's awesomeness.

So simple, so sincere, so genuine.

I know I've used this title before, but what this 14-year-old grandson said really struck me.

I'm still so taken by simplicity.

I've never heard anything more beautiful. =)

two.

like i said,

i guess you can't always get two wishes.

well,

i'll just choose the one i should choose,

and He can give me the one i really want if He wants to.

desmond:

"Which room has no windows?"

Yup, met the guy who can't pronounce my name in UM today.

Still the same except he suited up. Fuiyoh!

Desmond
You know, because of all your jokes, which I tell Ching Sze's nephew, I'm now his favourite uncle.

Me
Oooo, so I'm kinda his favourite aunt.

Desmond
Oh, you're an auntie izit?

Me
No, I deliberately avoided that word. Anyway, can I have a Kopiko?

Desmond
*whisper* Take two. One Mentos and one Kopiko.

Me
*takes*

Desmond
*whisper* Take one more for Ruth!

-back in the Faculty-

Me
Here, Desmond gave you a Kopiko!

Ruth
o_o

I miss Desmond! Haha!

On a random note:

One of my favourite cartoons in the 21st century.

They have at least one such weird song in every episode.

This one was when they tried to reassemble an old band, found the former drummer in the library, and tried to convince him that he has rhythm. Haha. =D

hebrews 12:12-13

"Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed."

I have got to re-align my mind as to the definition of 'lame'.

It took me 14 years, but I've learned to either concede, agree to disagree, or just shut up during this period of time.

DMSJ 2012.

188744_1310327056338_1775469403_571780_3209715_n

DMSJ 2011.

188744_1310327056338_1775469403_571780_3209715_n DMSJ 2012.

After 9 years…

We won.

Not that we’d have died without it,

but we screamed like mad anyway.

Because it was just so unbelievable.

Not because we didn’t believe in our contestants,

but because it’s been too long since we last held the cup.

Congratulations,

Celine, Joel, Ken (this is my youngest brother whee!).

Good job training them,

Derk!

And…

all together now:

Day 1 1

Kinda helps me understand how the Israelites felt when they were finally redeemed from slavery in Egypt after 400 years.

Haha.

Some people wonder why I will break a leg and an arm to be there at DMSJ.

Maybe it’s partly due to the fact that I was there at the very first quiz,

when it was still DMS, and not DMSJ.

The year 2000.

I hated being there actually.

I hated the games,

the Fellowship Night.

Mostly because I’m useless on land (still am),

and because I can’t act to save my life.

But by and by, I began to love the people I only saw once a year.

People from Johor,

Shah Alam,

and even Malacca.

Because Malaccans in PJ and KL don’t come home anymore.

We’re always in different places the rest of the year,

but this one day in the year,

we come together and worship in one place.

To me, that is what DMSJ is all about.

Who cares about falling down while trying to get a ping pong ball over to the other side during a telematch game?

Who cares about public announcing to the world that I can’t act via my lousy acting?

Ok, maybe I care.

*self-conscious*

But what are those in comparison to the blessings I receive by simply being there at DMSJ?

DMSJ is not about events and activities,

it’s about the people.

If I can’t fellowship with fellow Christians on earth,

what’s life in heaven going to be like for me?

As much as we are still earthly beings,

I think our earthly lives should reflect as much of our heavenly lives as possible.

After all,

isn’t that what being a Christian is all about?

Anyway,

DMSJ 2012 may be the last in the DMSJ series.

So I’m glad I went.

Haha. =)

this is.

Too pink.

But it's the nicest colour of the lot. so i tried to save the day by making the date blue.

fat.

I was making good progress, finishing my assignment and all.

Then I had to go read a very famous blog about fat people.

I read it with all neutrality, but the very frequent caps and curse words just made my head spin la.

It made me imagine the writer yelling and middle-fingering, and it's just not a good scene to have in an already worn-out brain.

I'm tired now.

*faints*

I don't mean to judge, but I think strong opinions can still be expressed without an entire post of caps and curse words.

I think sometimes people confuse passion with rage.

Tuesday, 6 March 2012

prof talat:

"As an officer of the court, the Public Prosecutor has a duty to assist the accused person. This means that if the defence asks the police to serve a subpoena on a witness to compel him to come to court, they must assist the defence. If the Deputy Public Prosecutor comes across facts that are favourable to the accused person, he must make them known to the defence."

I already knew this, from my research for my assignment, and I also knew that the Public Prosecutor is supposed to be an "impartial court officer", whose duty is first and foremost to ensure justice is done, and not merely to secure a conviction.

As someone rightly pointed out, it's impossible to expect so much of a "mere mortal" prosecutor.

So when I asked this question after Prof Talat said what he said, I'd already guessed the answer to it:

"Prof, do they actually do this in practice?"

What I didn't expect was perhaps the split-second "No."

That's why I rolled my eyes.

If it had been 4 seconds before "No", I may have just nodded knowingly.

To not resign ourselves to a system that has so little to offer.

Now that is something.

two stubborn old people.

Reading this old post and looking at the photos of children looking remarkably like their parents, I just can't help but feel amazed.

(Dad & Shaun, Mum & me)

Amazed and fully aware that the blood of our parents indeed runs through our veins.

If we inherit our parents' looks, do we also inherit their traits?

We were told a story. A true story of an elderly couple fighting over a house and an old car.

They weren't divorced; they'd been separated for years.

The wife had been living in the house, which was registered in her name.

The husband had rented a room somewhere for years.

The husband wanted the house back, the wife refused to give in.

At first glance, it seemed like a typical case of money-faced people. Or maybe old people with nothing better to quarrel about.

The wife eventually said that she wouldn't give him the house because he'd been unfair to her, and she didn't trust him.

"What do you mean 'unfair'?", someone asked.

"I think he has another woman."

The husband, possibly out of his mind, confessed.

He had another woman.

Or more accurately, he had had another woman. For years, maybe. Since they separated. Since before they separated.

She went hysterical.

He refused to apologize.

They couldn't settle that day.

All this in response to a very simple question I'd asked.

But this story gave me even more questions. Questions I didn't think I'd like to ask my story-teller.

One of the questions we're trained to ask as mediators is, "If an apology would help settle the matter with her, would you like to try apologizing?"

Would it have settled the matter?

What had been a simple matter of a house and a car had now become a complex matter of betrayal and trust.

"I'm sorry" might not have settled the matter, but I'm sure it would've helped. At least a little.

But I suspect he won't say he was sorry because he wasn't.

He just wasn't sorry.

It's funny how we say we're sorry for little things - like stepping on somebody's toe, or accidentally elbowing someone, or taking someone's pencil by mistake - but won't say we're sorry for the things that really matter, the things that could change our lives.

Back to parents and children -

Does a child inherit his father's unfaithfulness?

Someone asked another question after the story - "Did they reconcile?"

"No."

"It's sad."

A shrug.

"That's life."

Another question -

Is it?

Should we resign ourselves to "life", or should we hope?

And this is why I shall not be a Family Law lawyer.
Because I can't be impartial and watch a family collapse.
I just can't.

shoe.

if i could just throw a shoe at someone and accomplish something by it, i would.

but i know i'll accomplish nothing, so i wouldn't.

this game?

this is old stuff.

one day someone will come up with a game that allows you to select the person you want to throw a shoe at by uploading his/her picture or something.

that will be the day.

that will be the day we have less murders.

i tell you the truth.

sigh.

hwei, remember what you wrote.
the world isn't perfect,
and we mustn't expect it to be.
in a perfect world...
there would be no trials la.
it's a pun.
but...
sigh.

i have a job!

I'm happy, not so much because I have a job, but because of how it came about.

And because it was a result of this:

This will all be a reminder to me that I'm a Christian first, then a lawyer.

I'm coming home.

chinese new year.

The highlight, I think, of Chinese New Year 2012, was yesterday's visit to my former boss's house.

Because there, I found a heart that echoes mine.

All I want to do is practice law.

Nine active Christian lawyers in Malacca.

God willing, I will be the tenth.

"it".

I don't know if it's because I left MGC, or because of the year-long advocacy course, but I feel like I've lost "it".

I can't lead anymore, the way I used to in MGC.
I've lost the confidence in organising ice-breakers.
I feel strange when I'm asked to lead worship.
I'm less proactive than I used to be.

I think I'm less intelligent and less analytical too.

Devastating, for both a student of the law of God and the law of man.

How do I get "it" back when I don't even know what "it" is?

Or maybe I've just become more brethren. (yes, it's an adjective)

Saturday, 7 January 2012

First YF Saturday of 2012.

I'm back in PJ and blogging when I should be studying.

I think I'm at that point of my life as a student.

The -Ever Point, i.e.:

Whatever
(Whatever lah this exam)

However
(Die leh if I fail)

Forever
(I'll be in UM forever...)

Ever
(... and ever...)

Ever
(*eerie echo*)

When did I become so lame? I used to be quite serious.

Seriously.

Was so long ago i think only my siblings remember.

Anyway.

Two students made me very happy today.

I will share my joy after my -Ever exam.

i'm still getting used to...

...people asking me for legal advice.

It's weird.

Really weird.

Makes me feel like studying harder.

Haha.

fight.

So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart.

Now it happened, when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the walls of Jerusalem were being restored and the gaps were beginning to be closed, that they became very angry, and all of them conspired together to come and attack Jerusalem and create confusion.

Nevertheless we made our prayer to our God, and because of them we set a watch against them day and night.

Then Judah said, “The strength of the laborers is failing, and there is so much rubble that we are not able to build the wall.”

And our adversaries said, “Before they know it or see us, we will be right there among them and will kill them and put an end to the work.”

So it was, when the Jews who dwelt near them came, that they told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”

Therefore I positioned men behind the lower parts of the wall, at the openings; and I set the people according to their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

And I looked, and arose and said to the nobles, to the leaders, and to the rest of the people,

“Do not be afraid of them.
Remember the Lord,
great and awesome,
and fight for your brothers,
your sons,
your daughters,
your wives,
and your homes.”

Nehemiah 4:7-14

I was moved reading this today.

I was just talking yesterday, about the times we thought we couldn't do something, that it was impossible to survive..

I've had those times, the worst of them being in 2010.

In 2011, I turned around and looked, the way Nehemiah did, and I was amazed. I remember what I said then - "How far we've come!"

People who don't believe in miracles are people who've never looked back and said just that -

How far we've come.

I don't do year-end evaluations anymore, because ever since 2010, my year begins and ends in May.

Posted this before -

when the world says you can't,
it'll tell you that you can.
what is it?

pili-pala.

Mary Poppins: "When you have nothing to say, say... supercallafredgilisticexpiellidocious!"

When I have nothing to say, I say pili-pala. Shorter. Simpler. Hah.

Caroling last week reminded me of how much I used to love to sing.

Not so much singing.

Bursting into song.

Sometimes it's the very motion of doing something that we love.

E.g.

It doesn't matter what tea I drink; I love the act of drinking tea more than tea itself. It makes me feel calm.

It doesn't matter what movie I watch; I love the act of watching a movie / TV show with my siblings more than the movie / TV show itself. It makes me feel relaxed.

It doesn't matter what song I sing; I love the act of bursting into song more than the song itself. It makes me feel musical.

It doesn't matter what I thank God for. I love the act of thanking God more than the good or bad thing itself. It makes me feel... grateful?

I think we 'grown-ups' need to learn to sing again.

Thank You, God, for this fine day
Thank You, God, for this fine day
Thank You, God, for this fine day
Right where we are!

=)

another poetic judge.

"I am told that I would be breaking new grounds in deciding these two issues. But, whether this decision would survive the test of time is yet to be seen. Only time will tell. Nathaniel Hawthorne in "The Marble Faun" once remarked that:

Time flies over us, but leaves its shadow behind.

Shakespeare, in Macbeth 1, said:-

Come what come may, Time and the hour runs through the roughest day.

What Hector Berlioz said as quoted in Almanach des lettres francaises is quite interesting. There he said:-
Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils.

I will now proceed to the heart of the matter."

--Per Abdul Malik J in Faridah Ariffin.

According to Gary Chapman (the guy who wrote Five Love Languages), there are also five languages of apology.

Of late, I have come to discover mine.

Just sincerely say you're

Sang this in church a few weeks ago. I've sung this song all my life (k exaggerating). But it really only sank in then.

Let me show you what went through my mind as I sang it.

I'm a pilgrim on the journey

Of the narrow road
And the PKV-ians who've gone before me line the way
Cheering me on as I try to be faithful,
Encouraging me when I'm weary
Using their lives as a stirring testament
That God's grace sustains, and more than sustains.

Surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,
How can I run the race only for the prize?
But as those who've gone before me
I want to leave to those behind me
The heritage of faithfulness passed on through godly lives

Oh may all who come behind me find me faithful
May the fire of my devotion light their way
May the footprints that I leave
Lead them to believe
And the life I live inspire them to obey

Oh may all who come behind me find me faithful.

I have hopes and dreams
When they have come and gone
And my successors sift through all I've left behind
May the clues that they discover
and the memories they uncover
Become the light that leads them to the road we each must find

Oh may all who come behind me find me faithful
May the fire of my devotion light their way
May the footprints that I leave
Lead them to believe
And the life I live inspire them to obey

Oh may all who come behind me find me faithful!

wills!

In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living.

Was delighted to find this in the Bible - Hebrews 9:16-17.

Amazing!

P/S: The New King James Version uses the words "testator" and "testament"!

Malacca, the centre of the universe.

The one post that can spark so many comments:

Untitled picture

Why do Malaccans love Malacca so much?

It's like... the way Penangites like to boast of how their food is better than Malacca's. (when it actually isn't. take that, Samuel Lee =P)

It's like... the way Ipohites like to say the Ipoh Chicken Rice Shop isn't from Ipoh.

It's like... the way Hainanese yell, "Su ki!" ("orang sendiri") when they meet a fellow Hainanese.

None of the above makes sense, especially the Penangite one.

So... there's really only one way to find out why we love Malacca so much.

Come visit us in Malacca.

Us.

Not just the state.

You'll see why.
